Traditional Retail Science tells us to merchandise the highest selling products – the milk, eggs, and bread- at the back of the store because as customers are walking through the store to get those staple items, they’re almost guaranteed to find something else they want along the way. The more products customers walk past, the more likely they’ll add multiple items to their basket and increase their final purchase amount (which is why when you enter a store for milk, eggs and bread, you usually end up with cookies, ice-cream and potato chips too!).
