So what is SEO? Search Engine Optimization is the process of getting your website to appear near the top of a search engine results page – the page that comes up when you search something on Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.

1. Content is king

One of the best ways to get your website at the top of a search engine results page is to have relevant and updated content. Bonus if you have a blog or newsletter that you regularly update! 2. Use Google AdWords and a keyword planner

Google AdWords is an advertising service that allows businesses to create ads and select what are called keywords (words searched by internet users) to advertise their businesses on search engine results pages. AdWords is relatively easy to use and has guided tutorials to help you get up and running.

3. Set up your Google local listing

Claim your local listing on Google My Business, especially if you have recently moved or added a new location. Search engines don’t always update their business directories automatically, which is why more than 50% of online directory listings are incorrect. Having an up-to-date listing is key to customers being able to find your location.

4. Encourage customers to leave reviews

When a customer seems pleased with the service they received, ask them to visit your reviews page. Positive reviews on Google listings and social media sites boost your SEO ratings. And although bad reviews also hurt your ratings, if customers see that you respond to negative reviews respectfully and try to resolve the issue, they will continue to view your business in a positive light.

5. Optimize for mobile

In 2013, the number of internet searches conducted on mobile devices surpassed that of the searches done on desktop computers. So it’s no longer a matter of whether mobile marketing is important; it’s a necessity. For many website platforms, going mobile is as simple as installing a plugin. 6. Track with Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a free website tracking tool for any google user. Set-up is as simple as syncing your website with the Google Analytics platform, and Google automatically tracks the activity instantly. With this tool, you’ll gain insight on how many people visit your site, how they find your website, what pages they look at, and more. These statistics can help you to understand your audience and target them better.

7. Don’t expect quick results

Getting to the top of the search engine results page doesn’t happen instantly. It takes time to build up your credibility and improve your ratings. Continue to do the things listed above, and you will see results soon enough.
